This private tour of Piazza Armerina is led by a local archaeologist, and begins with the visit of the 4th century C.E. Roman villa, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Evidence suggests that the villa probably belonged to a senator or an imperial procurator, and that it functioned as a center of administrative power for the surrounding territories. The villa contains the greatest complex of Roman mosaics in the world, an astounding 3500 square meters of splendid mosaic pavements depicting athletes, splendid hunting scenes, circus games, mythological animals, and much more.
A few kilometers away from the Villa del Casale lies Piazza Armerina, a medieval town with an enormous architectural and artistic heritage left by noble families and religious orders competing for prestige. Our walk will take us to the 16th century cathedral, on top of Mount Mira, where the town’s original nucleus stood. After a short walk down Via Vittorio Emanuele, we will reach the late 14th century Aragonese Castle and a splendid former Jesuit convent (today a public library). Right across is the church of Saint Anna with her convex facade characteristic of late Italian baroque. We end our stroll with the visit of a fine church dedicated to St. John the Baptist of Rhodes, donated to the Knights of the Hospital of Jerusalem in the late 12th century.

Tour duration: ca. 3.5h

Our guide Serena was wonderful—knowledgeable, clear, easy to be with, and enthusiastic about Villa del Casale, which was one of the highlights of the trip.

The day with Serena at Morgantina and the Casa Romana del Casale was a special highlight. How often does one have the opportunity to spend time with a national hero? Ted C.
