With a local guide who is also a wine expert, take an orientation walk in the historic center. This is a great introduction to key features of the city. Your guide will introduce you, in broad terms, to Palermo’s history, with stops at the Quattro Canti (a scenic space that unifies the four central urban divisions of the city), Piazza Pretoria and Piazza Bellini with its two important Norman buildings, the Martorana and San Cataldo, as well as the city’s Cathedral.
Emphasis will also be put on Palermo today, the problems and challenges the city faces, and the role played by the Mafia.
This guided walk ends with a degustation of 5 Sicilian wines (whites and reds) accompanied by platter of local cheeses and cold cuts at one of the city’s best enoteca. This is a good opportunity to ask your guide anything about wine, of course, but also, importantly, about Palermo and Sicily, and the manners and customs across the island. This guided tour of Palermo should make for a fascinating orientation to this complex capital, and Sicily as a whole.
