The Etna

Explore the Etna, Europe’s largest volcano, in the company of an alpine guide and Etna specialist. Black tracks of lava can be seen running for kilometers. If the lunar landscape of the volcano’s upper slopes is amazing to see, so are the colors the lava produces in the plane below, by fertilizing citrus groves, vineyards and olive groves.

A-Serracozzo Grotto and the Vale del Bove
On this guided hike, we explore the eastern slopes of Mount Etna. As we walk up towards the Serracozzo lava cave, we pass through a birch grove – unique to the island – beech and pine trees, as well as dried-up riverbeds strewn with polished lava stones. We enter the Serracozzo grotto, a cave formed by a flow of lava during the 1971 eruption. We then pursue our hike towards Rocca della Valle, on the north-eastern crest of the famous Valle del Bove, from where we enjoy a commanding view of the valley bellow, a unique and dynamic landscape, shaped by hundreds of thousands of years of volcanic activity. We enjoy a light picnic before beginning our descent towards the refuge. By the end of the excursion, you will have become familiar with the history and the peculiar geology and flora of the Etna in general, and of this area of the Etna in particular.

B-Piano Provenzana and eruptive mouths of 2002-2003
This private Etna excursion begins at Piano Provenzana, a small resort on a northern slope of the volcano that was completely destroyed during the last significant eruption. We walk along a black flow of lava formed during the last significant eruption of 2002-2003, until we reach the remarkable “bottoniera” (a series of buttonholes) which the Etna designed in 27 days of intense activity. This extremely colorful landscape is lunar-like, and riddled with volcanic ‘bombs’. During our descent towards the Monte Timparossa refuge, we pass the majestic cone of Monte Nero. We will enjoy a picnic at the refuge. We return to Piano Provenzana in the early hours of the afternoon.
