Making marzipan fruits in Palermo
In Sicily, making marzipan fruits is an art in itself. Marzipan sweets are sculpted and coloured (with diverse vegetable dyes) in such a way as to resemble real fruits.
In Palermo, the art of making marzipan sweets is believed to have originated at the monastery of the Martorana, where nuns decorated the bear trees with fruit shaped marzipan sweets to welcome important members of the clergy who visited the monastery during Easter. This is the reason why Palermo’s marzipan sweets are called frutta Martorana.
Today, these sweets are eaten during a great many religious celebrations, particularly on All Saints’ day, All Souls’ day and throughout the Christmas season.
During this 3hrs workshop, learn to model and colour a great variety of marzipan fruits such as oranges, lemons, bananas, prickly pears, tomatoes, etc., with Ignazzio Ahssan, artist and virtuoso of the frutta Martorana.
